One Organisation Helping Invisible Members of Community
Since opening its doors in June 2001, the ASRC has become the largest provider of aid, advocacy and health services for asylum seekers in Australia. Working directly with asylum seekers, both living in the community and detention, ASRC provides direct aid and support as these people seek refugee status in Australia. The Centre provides gratis food and material aid, professional medical assistance, legal counsel, grief and trauma counselling, education, social opportunity, and employment services for those who are afforded rights to work.
Recognising the institutional inequities in our otherwise proud nation, the ASRC also campaigns and lobbies on behalf of asylum seekers and all Australians who want to change the unjust policies that Australia has adopted - a contravention of its own undertakings and commitments under law. Most importantly, in times of despair and hopelessness the ASRC is a place of comfort, friendship, hope and respite for those most needy.
With all the positive press coverage received in recent times in relation to a change of government in Australia, one could be forgiven for thinking that the Asylum "issue" is no longer. Unfortunately these persecuted seekers of refuge are still being persecuted further by the Australian system, by sentiments of racism, and by a general misunderstanding of what it means to seek asylum. Even with absolute reformation of immigration policies, the legacy of damage will persist and require the continued support and compassion of the wider Australian community.
